July 2018 – After the successful Memoir Writing workshop held in the autumn of 2017, Belmond La Residencia in the idyllic village of Deià, Mallorca, is delighted to welcome best selling writer Allegra Huston back again this year. Allegra ́s best-selling memoir LOVE CHILD was published in 2009, and her first novel, SAY MY NAME, was published to great critical acclaim in 2017 (UK) and 2018 (US).
EXPERIENCED WORKSHOP LEADER & EDITOR
The writer and editor Allegra Huston based in Taos, New Mexico, has not only written a memoir, a novel and several screenplays but also led writing workshops around the world, including for the Arvon Foundation in the UK, the Huston School of Film at the National University of Ireland, Galway and the University of Oklahoma.
Her praised book “Love Child, A memoir of Family lost and found”, tells the story of her fragmented childhood. From the intimidating presence of filmmaker John Huston, introduced to her at 4 years old as her father, to her early years under the shadow of her famous sister Anjelica and the Hollywood élite she mingled with, to as a young teenager being presented to her biological father, the British historian John Julius Norwich. Allegra’s memoir is a poignant tale of a child trying to find where and to whom she belongs while feeling herself a misfit among the Hollywood royalty.
After reading English at Hertford College, Oxford, Allegra worked in publishing in London, first at Chatto and Windus and then as Editorial Director of Weidenfeld & Nicholson. Following this experience, she worked for two years with the film distribution and production company Pathé.
Regarding the workshop in Deià Allegra states: “My goal is to help you bring energy and specificity to your writing and give you tools for exploring structure and tone. I guarantee you will be surprised by what you write!”
WRITING AMIDST THE TRAMUNTANA MOUNTAINS
The creative workshop in Mallorca will take place in October and begins on Sunday 28th with a welcome afternoon tea and an introduction to the course by Allegra, followed by a pleasurable “walk and talk” around Deià with Dr. Jacqueline Waldren, an anthropologist and long-time resident of this enchanted village.
On Monday 29th the course begins. Five morning workshops are devoted to the discussion of techniques, generating material and writing exercises. In the afternoons Allegra conducts one-on-one sessions with participants—each participant receives two—while those not meeting with her are free for more writing or to enjoy the pleasures of Deià and surroundings. The workshop culminates with a farewell gala dinner in Belmond La Residencia’s beautiful fine-dining El Olivo restaurant, and readings from students’ work.
The course grants a true opportunity to learn from an exceptional writer, editor and workshop leader who has worked with two Nobel Prize winners, three Booker Prize winners, Sir James Goldsmith, Matthew Parris and Jane Goodall, among others. Allegra Huston ́s best-selling memoir LOVE CHILDwas published in 2009, and her first novel, SAY MY NAME, was published to great critical acclaim in 2017.
The fee for this fantastic course is 1.699 Euros. Attendees who book accommodation at Belmond La Residencia will be offered an automatic room upgrade for the duration of the workshop. For the first time this year two additional places for 1.000 Euros are offered. This price includes all the above elements except the one on one sessions with Allegra.
Last year ́s participant Kate O’ Toole from Dublin commented: “I was struck by the quality of Allegra ́s teaching. It bestowed a touch of magic. The leader, the people, the setting, the entire workshop was truly gorgeous in every detail.”
